L.A. LIVE -
EV Charging Case Study

Epic Charging powered a seamless public EV charging expansion at L.A. LIVE, combining flexible payments, app-free access, and enterprise-grade control

Introduction

According to the Department of Energy, the number of public EV charging stations in the United States rose from just under 29,000 in December of 2020 to more than 61,000 by February of 2024, with an average of 1,000 new chargers being added weekly. Moreover, the number of public EV charging ports across the country has more than doubled during this same time frame, hitting over 192,000 as of late 2024. Currently, 95% of Americans live in a county with one or more publicly accessible EV charging stations. This astronomical growth is indicative of a larger nationwide trend that proves it’s possible to balance sustainable transportation and energy infrastructure prioritization with utility, convenience and a practical lifestyle. Public property owners, from state and local municipalities to hospitality and retail sites, have begun capitalizing on this EV charging boom, and cities like Los Angeles are leading the way.
Background
L.A. LIVE has been one of Los Angeles’s premier sports, entertainment and event destinations since its completion in early 2010. The sprawling complex encompasses a massive 5.6 million square feet around Crypto.com Arena (home to the Lakers, Kings, and Sparks) and the Peacock Theater, a 7,100-seat awards and concert venue. The campus boasts 13 restaurants, a bowling alley, a 14-screen Regal Cinemas movie theater, The GRAMMY Museum® and close to 4,000 parking spaces. In addition, over four million square feet of event space and first-rate catering are available for corporate and private functions. The Ritz-Carlton Hotel and JW Marriott Los Angeles offer visitors world-renowned accommodations, while those who choose to stay permanently can opt for one-, two- or three-bedroom condos at the Ritz-Carlton Residences. With the eyes of the world watching as top-tier athletes, Hollywood celebrities and Fortune 500 companies descend on the campus, L.A. LIVE decided the time was ripe for expanding their EV charging infrastructure, and they chose Epic Charging as their partner in the venture.

Challenges

L.A. LIVE owner AEG Worldwide estimates that over 20 million people a year, or 55,000 people a day, visit the complex – more than the Disneyland Theme Park. This surge in popularity brought with it a demand for more EV chargers as Los Angeles continued to embrace electric mobility. A USC study cites that, as of 2024, about 7.3% of all vehicles registered in LA County were electric, an increase of 284% since 2020, meaning that over 4,000 daily L.A. LIVE visitors per day could be driving EVs. Accommodating this engaged and affluent customer base soon became obvious to AEG, especially considering that household incomes in the top 10 EV-owning zip codes exceed $200,000 annually, meaning these are visitors with money to spend. The biggest challenge was scaling quickly with a robust network provider that offered Nayax credit card reader support, flexible pricing engine features and fully automated payouts for revenue received from electricity sales, among other things.
Solution
After rigorously assessing numerous EV charging software platforms, AEG opted for Epic Charging to spearhead their infrastructure expansion project at L.A. LIVE thanks to our cost-friendly solutions, open charge point protocol (OCPP) firmware, dedicated support services and unblemished track record of migrating chargers at scale. We oversaw the installation of 50 new ports – both Level 2 and DCFC – using chargers and hardware manufactured by our partner, Atom Power, all while prioritizing security, visibility and control. Our charge point management system (CPMS) integrated seamlessly with Nayax credit card readers while offering features critical to AEG such as the ability to charge idle fees, tiered pricing models (i.e., prices go up after four hours), flexibility in changing pre-authorized amounts, and customized discounts for L.A. LIVE employees. Furthermore, we were able to offer EV drivers a hassle-free experience via app-free charger access and 24/7 driver support.

Impact

L.A. LIVE has been able to utilize our customizable dashboards to maximize control of their chargers and facilitate transparent reporting. Real-time analytics are allowing for optimized electricity usage through demand response that minimizes grid strain. Our OCPP-compliant firmware ensures interoperability with nearly any hardware manufacturer to ensure the complex will enjoy trouble-free scaling into the future. And our flexible white-label capabilities have allowed for L.A. LIVE branding on all charging units without the need for third-party developers. Meanwhile, thousands of LA-area EV drivers have been able to take advantage of this expanded amenity without endlessly circling the parking structure waiting for a dedicated EV spot to open up. This means more time to enjoy the complex’s many offerings.
