Epic Charging becomes the first CSMS to earn CTEP certification
Menlo Park, CA – September 12, 2025 – Epic Charging is proud to announce that our Charging Station Management System (CSMS) has received a California Type Evaluation Program (CTEP) Certificate of Approval from the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA), Division of Measurement Standards (DMS). This certification validates the accuracy, display, and transaction integrity of metered energy delivered through Epic activated charging sessions.
Why this matters
CTEP was originally designed for fuel dispensers to certify accuracy at the pump. In recent years, the framework has been extended to EV charging so drivers, site hosts, and regulators can trust the precision of electricity dispensing and pricing. Historically, certification focused on hardware manufacturers. Epic collaborated closely with CDFA to expand the framework so that EV charging software providers could be certified as well, reflecting how modern EV transactions rely on both hardware and software for weights and measures compliance.
Epic is the first CSMS to achieve CTEP certification, setting a new bar for software level measurement accuracy and transparency in EV charging.
What is certified
The CTEP approval covers Epic Charging CSMS, including:
Display of delivered kWh and unit price with 0.0001 kWh registration
QR-code-based activation and Web/App flows with agreement of indications
Digital receipts, session history, and event logging for auditability
Operation when paired with specific CTEP approved EV charger models
This certification confirms that Epic’s software experience from scan to start to receipt meets California’s legal for trade requirements for Electric Vehicle Fueling Systems.
What this means for partners and hosts
Compliance confidence for California public charging and projects with weights and measures requirements.
Transparent, accurate billing aligned to CTEP and NIST expectations.
A future proof path as more states align around NIST Handbook 44 and National Type Evaluation Program (NTEP) style oversight for EV charging.
