Epic Charging Approved as Network Provider for Atlantic City Electric

Atlantic City Electric is going all in on EV charging. Reports by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection show that 13.56% of all vehicles sold statewide in 2024 were electric, marking the fifth straight year-over-year increase. Such clear interest in EVs drove Atlantic City Electric to create the EVsmart program, which offers multifamily properties and workplaces a chance to capture significant cost savings associated with EV infrastructure installation. Additionally, they have chosen Epic, working alongside EnergyHub and other qualified partners, as one of the program’s approved software providers.

About the Program

The EVsmart program was created to facilitate the transition to sustainable transportation throughout the South Jersey area by providing site hosts with rebates that cover the costs of pre-wiring electrical infrastructure where chargers will be installed. Examples of covered costs include, but are not limited to, junction boxes, conduits, service panels and electrical wiring. The program is currently scheduled to sunset on December 31st, 2026, with funds distributed on a first-come, first-served basis to approved applicants. Restrictions limit funding to no more than 10 ports per site, and no one customer will be allocated more than 20% of the program’s total budget. In addition, all work must be performed by a licensed electrician, and site hosts must 1) guarantee chargers are accessible to all residents and patrons while 2) sharing their charging data with Atlantic City Electric.

Program Benefits

Multifamily properties, workplaces, fleet operators and various public charging sites stand to benefit enormously from the rebate, which covers 75% of allowable installation expenses up to a cap of $5,000 per port. Moreover, if the property is located in an overburdened community – defined as one with low-income status, large minority populations and/or limited English proficiency – the rebate increases to 100% of allowable expenses up to a cap of $6,700 per port. Ultimate long-term benefits include accelerated EV adoption that lowers South Jersey’s carbon footprint and greatly reduced barriers to the deployment of infrastructure necessary for such adoption.

Eligibility Requirements

Properties seeking program approval must be located in Atlantic City Electric’s service area and have a valid Atlantic City Electric account number for the installation site. All infrastructure must be new, qualified smart Level 2 chargers that are ENERGY STAR certified, have a rated capacity of at least 3.8kW, and use standard SAE J1772 L2 or NACS connectors. Atlantic City Electric will require site hosts to provide an installation quote from a licensed technician, a site plan that shows the proposed charger locations, a description of how the chargers will be used, and photos of the charger serial numbers once installation is complete. Interested property owners can submit an application with project details and electrical plans through an online portal, which also allows for round-the-clock access to check the application status while it’s under review. If approved, a notification is sent with the total incentive amount and a construction authorization. Once all chargers are installed and properly networked, documentation is verified and charging data is confirmed, the rebate is processed and issued.

Epic Charging’s Role

As an authorized network provider supporting Atlantic City Electric’s program alongside EnergyHub and other partners, we offer site hosts that are approved for the EVsmart program a leading-edge charge point management system (CPMS) that utilizes open charge point protocol (OCPP), meaning interoperability with nearly any charger on the market and enhanced flexibility that all but eliminates vendor lock-in. What’s more, our software helps property owners meet requirements from utility rebate programs like this one that simultaneously increase profits while reducing grid strain as electricity usage rises. Our servers are US-based and SOC 2 compliant, affording customers the highest level of data protection available, and our 24/7 customer support means troubleshooting issues quickly to limit charger downtime. These are just some of the reasons why the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) certified us for meeting the energy industry's most rigorous standards for quality, security and performance. Finally, our CPMS boasts effortless navigation, monitoring and data capture capabilities as well as white label solutions that allow for a tailor-made brand experience without requiring outside developers.

The Bottom Line

The EVsmart program is an important step toward the Garden State’s electric mobility evolution, offering site hosts the opportunity to realize a valuable new amenity for their residents and patrons at a fraction of the cost otherwise. Furthermore, Epic’s status as an approved network provider means those hosts have access to the most flexible and robust CPMS available today – one dedicated to providing a hassle-free experience by ensuring, among other things, compliance with the utility company’s rebate program and maximum uptime for EV drivers.
